Zapotec Handwoven Wool Rugs

Zapotec weaving is among the finest quality in North America, second only to Navajo weaving. The Zapotecs live in and around the beautiful village of Teotitlan del Valle in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The Zapotec people raise and shear the sheep, then clean, card, and dye the wool, often using vegetal dyes. The rugs are then woven on a primitive hand-loom. Each Zapotec weaving is an individual work of art, which with proper care, will last several generations.
